Predicting How AI will change Design Jobs

I’ve never claimed to be a fortune teller, but I can always attempt to make an educated guess on the future.

Based on current AI models and the possible advancements they will make in the near future, change in the industry is inevitable. There’s currently a lot of fear (and fear mongering) about “AI is going to take your job!” or “AI is replacing art”, but the reality is that AI isn’t replacing these jobs, it is simply being implemented into these jobs.

I personally do not believe that designers will be replaced by AI, but I do think that AI tools will keep a strong prevalence within the industry. It is likely that we will have better documentation of what images have used AI, not only for documentation purposes, but because AI generated content dramatically falters whenever it is fed something AI generated. Since this has became an issue for some AI models, I think we will start seeing more and more AI detection tools, a divide in “Non-AI” designers and “AI” designers, and possibly even an extreme increase in regular automatically generated content, but “dead internet theory” is for another day…

Why has Adobe Hopped on the AI Train?

As mentioned in a previous post, “AI” is the biggest buzz word in the entire digital world at the moment. If a company is wanting to improve their products in current-day, the next “best” step is to put those two letters somewhere within their tools or product.

Adobe has simply done what every company is currently doing, aiming for a profit. When they have this access to such incredible, groundbreaking technology, it would almost seem idiodic to skip this opportunity. Although they have been extremely pushy on their AI model Firefly, they have made some pretty useful tools that can be very effective, but sometimes you need to take a step back and question if it’s really the best decision.

Pro Adobe and AI (Opposing View)

While there could be some ethical arguments about the use of AI in Adobe tools, the positives outweigh the negatives. When creating, there are many processes that are heavily improved by using the latest AI tools. For example, if you need to remove a small object in an image in Photoshop, instead of spending an extreme amount of time working on it, you now can simply remove it in seconds with AI! Utilizing these tools can easily increase your overall production speed in a simple, effective manner without the product looking sloppy.
